The USA considers itself a shining example of democracy, freedom and "aspiration". Yeah? · One in 11 families, one in nine Americans, and one in six children are officially poor.

· The most affluent fifth of the population received half of all household income last year. The poorest fifth got 3.5 per cent.

· The official poverty line is an income of $18,104 pa (£11,570) for a family of four. A single parent of two working full-time for a minimum wage would make $10,712 (£6,846).

· 40 per cent of homeless men are veterans.

· Up to a fifth of America's food, worth $31bn, goes to waste each year, with 130lb of food per person ending up in landfills.

And that's just the tip of a very, very big bloody socio-political iceberg!

    Where did you dig this nonsense up from? The Greenpeace website? Whenever people use the old "tip of the iceberg" line it's means no-one has any more information so they are going to rely on their prejudices to inform their view.

    Like the rubbish peddeled by the Welfare lobby in Australia, the so-called poverty line is just below median earnings! Living on $A36 000 a year aint too hard!
    Ask the people in the US whether they think they are in the the greatest country in the world and you know what 97% will respond with: Yes.

    As the recent round of Congress elections shows, the majority of Americans are behind George W Bush's fight for freedom. And it seems this same majority is happy with the American economic system which rewards hard work and doesn't pamper those in the community who need a kick up their ass to be productive.
    If you lot love your socialist nirvana why don't you move to China! Oh, thats right. They are another country that is copying the successful US capitalist model!
